How to Replace an audi q5 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi new key since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning.
